Introducing our President: Lion Gerald Stonehouse. Mr Stonehouse

Lion Gerald has been a member of the club since the late 1980's when he finished as an Apexian in the intervening years he has been a board member holding various positions up to and including VP's.

In private life he started his working life as an Apprentice Motor Mechanic and was to later start up a successful business known as Steering Brake and Clutch Services, eventually selling out and building motor homes for his own use. He and Dianne are seasoned travelers, and are shortly to venture to South America, and sometime further into the future travel through Europe.

My Message to the members

I feel proud and very honoured; to be entrusted with this position in our Lions Club in a year that will be as important in History as it will be 50 years since our club was formed.

I use the word our club in the sense that it is our club, and I hope that over my term of office we will accomplish much together, that of cause means making demands of your time and energy. It is our club and it will be successful only if we put up our hands and volunteer when asked. You get out of a club only what you put in.

I would like to thank Immediate Past President Keith for his last two years of outstanding leadership he has given to this club. He has led us though a tight economic period but we still managed to raise and give away funds in excess of $35,000.00 in the last financial year.

I have heard that Lion Keith got a little extra help from up above. Thank you Lion Keith for a job well done.

I would also like to thank the retiring members of the board and welcome the incoming new Board of Directors.

Membership

Membership is high on my priority list. Our club is rapidly becoming a club of senior citizens due to our average age of 62 our female members are helping to keep the average age down. WE need new members, we need younger members. We need younger members to join as a group with new ideas and social activities. Remember that those who play together stay together.

I have a few ideas on improving our membership if you have any don’t be backward in coming forward we are all here to listen. Remember many hands make the work load lighter.

My Theme for this year is   “GIVE AND RECEIVE.”

About thirty years ago I was listening to a tape produced by Earl Nightingale a well known Gospel and motivational speaker. He asked the question would you stand in front of a unlit open fire and expect to get warm, naturally the answer is no. Because you have to Give to Receive

If you had Given fuel and lit the fire, you would have Received heat. I think most things within our Lions Club, our private lives, and business lives applies to this rule.

For an example, I went to a locally owned Video hire shop. I knew the manager and I asked him which day was his quietest day for video hire he told me Tuesday. I asked would you Give me 500 free video vouchers to be used on a Tuesday only.

The end result being he gave me the vouchers.

I gave one voucher to my customers who spent over $30.00 with my business. He received new customers he did not know before. I received more repeat business.

So it does work if you Give, you Receive.

If you give your friends and neighbours more information about Lions perhaps we will receive more new members. If you give of your time and energy to a club project you should receive that feeling of being appreciated by your club and the wider community. If our Club gives our time and financial support to a major project hopefully we will receive media coverage and community recognition.

If you do that job you have been putting off for so long you receive that feel good feeling.

I have a little story to share with you. About three years ago I attended my youngest daughters wedding in Queensland. Dianne kept reminding me to thank so and so, so and so, during my response as the brides parent. Unbeknown to us the master of ceremonies must have overheard. So when the time came he asked Dianne to respond on behalf of the parents instead of me fifteen minutes later Dianne finished speaking resulting in a bad back ever since due to the pats on the back she received.

That was an example of Give & Receive

Dianne was giving me advice and received admiration from the wedding group for doing such a fantastic job. I was hoping Dianne could have spoken for me on this occasion also.

We will have a memorable year together.
